Seasonal Musings: Between Cosy Days and Christmas Lights
Inspiration
As autumn deepens in southern Greece, I find myself caught between the calm of cosy November days and the sparkle of Christmas lights beginning to appear. This is the in-between season—the quiet before the festivities—is one I hold close every year, a time for slower mornings, small rituals and gentle anticipation.
There’s a gentle pause in the air these days—that quiet moment between the slower rhythms of November and the sparkling anticipation of December. The light feels softer, the days shorter and the air carries a chill that makes home feel even more inviting.
In southern Greece, this shift happens subtly. The last of the vine leaves have fallen down, the first clementines are appearing at the farmer’s market and the mornings begin to hum with harvest. The morning light is more golden these days—it leaks through our home just right. I find myself drawn small, ordinary moments —the ones that make a house feel like a true home. The slow pace.
November is the month I romanticise more than any other. I pour my morning coffee a little slower, I notice the leaks of light morning brings and how it shapes the mood. I think of all the autumn rituals—a cosy blanket draped over the sofa, apple recipes, cinnamon, a book that takes you somewhere else entirely, jazz tunes in the kitchen while I cook and family movie nights. There’s something about theses small, familiar things that make this season feel endlessly warm and nostalgic.
But even as we settle into this calm, the first hints of Christmas begin to appear. In our town, a small café has already set out its holiday decor, lights are being strung and I can’t help but smile at their gentle twinkling against the evening sky. There’s something magical in that first sparkle—something that stirs a familiar joy. It’s almost time!
Lately, I find myself balancing two worlds lately—the slow, cosy days that ground me and the early shimmer of festive lights that lift my spirit. Both are comforting in their own way. Together, they form that delicate in-between—the space where gratitude mets excitement, where calm meets celebration.
This month, I’ve been focusing on the simple comforts that make home feel a little more cosy and magical as we move closer to the holidays.
At Home
As the weather cools and we spend more time at home, I lean into things that make our home feel warm and cosy. Small comforts that soften every corner and hold meaning as we move into the festive season.
Lush, soft blankets draped over the sofa, candlelight flickering in the evenings, fresh linens on the table and the scent of something baking in the oven, a pair of cosy slippers by the bed, thick wool socks for quiet mornings and the warm glow of a vintage-inspired lamp casting a gentle light across the room. It’s the season for hearty meals, slow soups simmering on the stove and baked goods.

The Table
As we edge closer to the festive season, I find myself gravitating toward intimate dinners and soft gatherings. I’m dreaming up a table that feels simple yet thoughtful. There’s something grounding about setting a table with beautiful, well-made pieces. It turns even the simplest dinner into a small celebration.
I’ve learnt that investing in a few elevated essentials makes hosting feel effortless—beautiful wine glasses, soft table linens, tapered candles, vases with seasonal flower arrangements. Nothing fussy. Small details that make any table setting feel welcoming, thoughtful and not overdone.
What I’m Wearing & Eyeing
As the weather cools here in southern Greece, my wardrobe naturally shifts into softer textures and layers. Neutral knits, relaxed denim, warm layers and simple accessories that make everyday dressing feel effortless. And while I keep my wardrobe intentionally minimal, there are a few thoughtful pieces I’m eyeing for the weeks ahead—timeless additions that blend comfort, ease and a touch of winter polish.
Reading, Watching, Cooking & Listening
This in-between season always draws me toward softer routines and rhythms that make home feel even more welcoming. As the days cool and the evenings stretch, I find myself returning to familiar comforts—good storied, wam kitchens, nostalgic films and music.
Reading
I’m currently reading Scaffolding by Lauren Elkin. I’m only a few chapters in but it already feels thoughtful, layered and written. And, like everyone else on the internet, I’m tempted to finally pick up Alchemised to see what all the hype is about.
Watching
You’ve Got Mail, It’s Complicated, Something’s Gotta Give…quintessential comfort movies—lighthearted, familiar and cosy in the best way. I look forward to the moment I can curl up on the sofa with blanket and warm popcorn.
Baking & Cooking
This weekend I’m baking Meghan’s apple pie pockets ( a sweet little seasonal treat) and I’m still determined to perfect my pizza dough—slow rising, simple toppings and plenty of good olive oil.
Listening To
Olivia Dean and soft jazz have been the soundtrack these days—mellow and warm, the perfect backdrop for cooking, writing and easing through the day.
As we linger between cosy days and Christmas lights, I’m reminded that beauty often lives in the quietest moments. This in-between space is one I return to every year, grounding me before December arrives.
Wishing you warmth, ease and a soft start to the festive season.
